Fury
of the ocean
Debbie Keiser and her daughter
Jordyn, 8, were in their McKinney home watching
TV news one night when they saw the giant
waves from the Indian Ocean tsunami racing
up a hotel wall.
The broadcast image hit home in an unanticipated
way.
"Jordy just freaked out," Ms. Keiser
said. "' Mommy, can that happen to us
here?'" she asked.
"No," Ms. Keiser said. "We
don't live by the ocean."
When Jordyn asked whether it could hit Mexico's
coast, where they often vacation, Ms. Keiser,
a former teacher for a gifted and talented
class, decided it was time for a science lesson.
She went to the kitchen, got out a baking
dish and filled it with water. Then she dropped
a penny in it to show how waves move in a
circular pattern. Still the questions came.
Looking for additional resources a child could
easily grasp, Ms. Keiser couldn't find any.
So she and her Plano business partner, Brenda
McGee - whose company specializes in academic
enrichment resources - decided to do what
they do best.
Their book, Tsunami: Fury of the Ocean,
was released this month. The teacher resource
guide for kindergarten through eighth grade
has several hands-on activities to help children
better understand "this devastating act
of nature" the authors said.
The book sells for $19.95, and 25 percent
of the proceeds will go to tsunami relief.

About
Us
What
others are saying about us
“The
essentials we believe McGee-Keiser curriculum provides
are flexibility for a district to customize the
curriculum for their program needs, alignment to
gifted performance standards, and highly qualified
curriculum writers. The McGee-Keiser curriculum
also provides the novice to the highly experienced
teachers a repertoire of sound instructional practices
that will benefit all learners.”
Suzy Hagar,
former Executive Director for Advanced Academic
Services
Carrollton-Farmers
Branch ISD.
“Our
teachers have said thank you many times for providing
the McGee-Keiser curriculum to the elementary campuses
with all its activities so clearly defined for the
gifted program. It has provided the vertical and
horizontal alignment we were searching for and provided
a clear curriculum path for both students and teachers.
We love it!”
-Judy L.
Brewster, Director of Curriculum & Instruction
Wylie ISD
“As
our gifted teachers struggled with covering all
the state standards plus differentiating for the
gifted students in their classes and addressing
depth and complexity in the curriculum, along comes
McGee-Keiser with solid curriculum that pulls everything
together! Thanks again Brenda and Debbie.”
-Karen Hairston,
Gifted and Talented Education
El Paso
ISD
“Brenda
and Debbie actively engaged teachers in hands-on
activities during their presentations of the McGee-Keiser
curriculum. They successfully motivated Duncanville

for the gifted students.”

have been using your curriculum in grades 1-5 GT
pull-out classes since Christmas and I love it.
It keeps my students interested and challenged.
It has reduced the amount of time I have to spend
planning lessons so that I can enjoy teaching instead
of constantly feeling overwhelmed. Thanks again
and keep up the good work."
