Middle
School Titles
The following
title are for grades 6-8 and contain 40+
hours of differentiated
curriculum.
Images
What
is your image? What image do you want to project?
Can you change or manipulate your image? Can you
hire a person to do that for you? These are just
a few of the discovery questions middle school students
investigate during this curriculum. In addition
to personal images, photographic images are examined
in detail, both historically and scientifically.
Students undertake a unique study of Alice's images
in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Students
also look at how images can affect cultural biases.
Powers
2002
NAGC Curriculum Award Winner!
Man
has yearned for power for centuries. The search
continues in this look at the multiple meanings
and uses of power. Students learn about persuasion
and discover how to prepare for and participate
in a debate setting. Students research alternative
forms of power and discover opportunities to create
new sources of power. Students analyze the power
of nature, and they scrutinize and debate the power
of the media. In this curriculum, students will
discover that the power of choice is an important
freedom.
Ages
Students
discover architecture and the evolution of the calendar
in this conceptual look at the word ages. From Sputnik
and the dawn of the space age, to the computer revolution
that has forever changed our lives, students explore
the issues that shape our world. How has advertising
evolved over the past 100 years? What made the dark
ages dark? The golden ages golden? The middle ages
middle? These questions and many others will be
explored as students are dealing with coming of
age themselves.
Conflicts
Are
all men created equal? Does the Food Guide Pyramid
represent the healthiest choices for the nutritional
needs of all? Is recycling the answer to the mounting
solid waste problems in society? Conflicts, old
and new, have plagued our world since the beginning
of time. During this conceptual study, students
are challenged to consider discrimination, propaganda,
misrepresentation of data, and war. Conflict of
interest is examined as students study examples
and then search for events in history when it has
occurred. Students discover that conflicts can be
both positive and negative, but have the power to
initiate changes to make our world a better place.
Connections
- Math Enrichment
Mathematics
comes alive in the conceptual study of Connections
. Students will enjoy exploring math through
art, literature, nutrition, poetry, science, and
history through meaningful topics with real-world
application. Hands-on discoveries, challenging puzzles,
and activities relevant to middle school students
will enhance understanding and purpose of probability,
geometry, algebra, and problem solving. Through
the study of connections, students will come to
appreciate how mathematics is connected to everything
they study.
